The world premiere of new musical, The Clockmaker’s Daughter, from composing duo Webborn and Finn has been announced. Showing at the Landor Theatre in Clapham from 1st June 2015, with previews from 27th May, it’s the first full-length musical from the pair.

An original story with original music, The Clockmaker’s Daughter is set in the fictitious Irish town of Spindlewood, an ancient settlement that, unsurprisingly, has a series of traditions founded on folklore and superstition, including ”The Turning of the Key”.

Every year, as the last night of winter lifts and the first morning of spring begins to unfold, the townsfolk gather to take part in a strange ritual, meeting in the town square where a statue bearing the likeness of a young girl stands, poised and still, one hand raised as if to toast the sky. Constance has stood in the square for as long as any can remember, but she is never more lifelike than tonight…

Setting out to be a ”beautiful story built around themes of prejudice, discrimination, animosity and a fear of the unknown – a folk musical with a specific, yet timeless, feel,” if new writers Daniel Finn and Michael Webborn pull it off, this could be a very special production indeed.

Director Robert McWhir, says, “The Clockmaker’s Daughter is, without doubt, one of the best written original contemporary British musicals I’ve had the pleasure of reading and listening to for a long time. This extremely well crafted piece of modern musical theatre is a tale of love and loss, with lashings of comedy thrown in for good measure (and a moral to boot). Eloquent yet colloquial dialogue and lyrics combine with intelligently referenced and nuanced music to create a score bristling with memorable soaring ballads and delightful comedic character numbers.”

Always excited by new musical theatre, we consider our appetites whetted, and cannot wait to see this staged.

Venue: Landor Theatre
